5 Examples of How Doing Less Gives You More
Right now I’m taking part in a mastermind group inside the Unemployable Community. There are a lot of good reasons to join a mastermind but without question the #1 reason is accountability.
Taking part in the mastermind requires completing the “Movement Course” and submitting your homework for review.
My main focus in the course is how to position Rogue Mogul for better things in the coming year.
Like many of you, I’ve bought courses online only to never finish them or to race through them without doing the work.
But thanks to the mastermind component, this time I had to slow down, do the work, and put a meaningful amount of thought behind my answers to the homework questions. And, did I mention accountability?
The result has been nothing less than a massive step forward in how I see the business of Rogue Mogul. I now understand where it fits into the business ecosystem, and how I can generate real revenue.
All because I took the time to do the work. To stop and think.
If you’re wondering how that translates into doing less, but getting more, here are 5 ideas for a productive, sane, and profitable 2023.
1. Take fewer courses, but do the work in the ones you sign up for.
If there is a mastermind or cohort option, take it. The outside perspective that others bring to the table is invaluable. This applies to buying books, too. Take the time to study them. Take notes. Mark them up, and apply what you have learned.
The bottom line: Commit to doing less, but deeper, work.
2. Write less, but spend more time delivering value and meaning.
That might mean your publishing schedule changes. Most of us have come up believing that we need to publish once a week. If that works for you, great. But if you do better work by publishing twice a month, then make the switch.
The bottom line: You and your audience will get far more out of quality than quantity (it’s noisy enough out there anyway).
3. Take fewer clients, but raise your rates.
We’re all guilty of not charging what we’re worth, but make this the year you take a step closer. I don’t know anyone that has regretted making this move. My highest-paying clients are almost always my best. Not because they spend the most, but because they tend to be more organized, professional, and have a clearer focus.
The bottom line: Raise your prices for fewer (and better) clients and more revenue.
4. Quit trying to just check the box.
It’s nice to knock things off your list, but make sure you’re focusing on the most important things first. If not-so-important things go undone, so be it. Quit using tasks as an excuse to procrastinate the important stuff.
The bottom line: Do fewer things, but get most important done.
5. Break away from social media.
Before you wig out about how important social media is to our businesses, hear me out. In December 2022, I did a digital detox. No social media at all. And I don’t miss it. But, I’ll be back because like you, I see the value in it for my business. However, the apps are off my phone and won’t be coming back. I’ll only use social when I’m at the computer, and 90% of that will be for business. Social media is a HUGE time-suck, so get focused on how much and when you use it. You’ll thank me later.
The bottom line: Less social media is more time you have to spend on things that actually matter, work or otherwise.
All of this requires a little letting go. And letting go of stuff we’re in the habit of doing is daunting. But in the immortal words of Tyler Durden:
“No fear. No distractions. The ability to let that which does not matter truly slide.”
Here’s wishing you a kick-a$$ 2023 with many good things to come.
Other Stuff That Caught My Attention
Favorite Positioning
If you’re thinking about how to position your business (which can blow things wide open if you get it right), this interview with April Dunford is a must listen. It’s the clearest example of a huge win through positioning I’ve heard, and it’s well worth the time to listen all the way through. You can also get her book on Amazon.
Podcast Promo Porn
If you’re thinking of adding a podcast in 2023, or already do a podcast and want to up your game, this intro for an interview with Gary Vaynerchuk is exceedingly well done and should provide some good inspiration.
